  • Description

Surrounding the castle, the enclosed grounds spread their 100 acres of grass and woods adjoining the forest of Fontainebleau. There are a few surprises : hidden behind the little house, the romantic spring from the neolithic times, called "source Saint-Sévère" gives birth to the canal ; the statue of Céres in the north, Fernand Py's statue of Saint Joseph under the clusters of trees, and the Maison d'Artagnan. But the major axis of this formal garden is indeed the great perspective : in the South, with the canal and the limetree path, it gives the Château de Bourron all its magnificence.

Giverny and the Claude Monet foundation
© Musée Marmottan Monet
" It is indispensable to make a pilgrimage to Giverny, in this flowery sanctuary, to understand better the Boss, to seize better the sources of its inspiration and to imagine him always living among us. "

The house in plastered pink, where lived from 1883 till 1926 the leader of the impressionistic school, found its internal decoration colored and its intimate charm of formerly. In several rooms is presented, according to the collision chosen by the Master of Giverny, his invaluable collection of Japanese prints. In some steps of the house the vast workshop of Nymphéas was also restored. It shelters the shop of the Foundation.
Gardens were reconstituted as before and offer henceforth to the admiration of the visitors this "picture executed straight from the nature" which the contemporaries of Claude Monet considered as one of its masterpieces.
In front of the house and the workshops, the Clos Normand, in the rectilinear plan, in the vaults of air plants surrounding with brilliant massifs, proposes of the spring in autumn the changeable palette of a painter gardener " madman of flowers".

Finally more low, formed by a diversion of the Epte, shaded by weeping willows, the garden of water with its famous Japanese bridge, its wisterias, its azaleas, its pond, became again this case of sky and water which gave birth to the pictorial universe of nymphéas.
